Let the following travel report of the 14-day tour by our specialist Dani Elsener inspire and excite you to visit this beautiful country.
Sri Lanka had been on our travel wish list for a long time - and with hindsight I can say that the island exceeded all our expectations. In 14 days, we experienced a fascinating mix of culture, nature, history and first-class hotels. The warmth of the people and the exclusive hospitality in particular made our trip something very special.
Our trip started in Galle, a city that breathes history. The first walk through the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was like a journey back in time. Winding alleyways, lovingly restored houses and the pleasant sea climate made every moment a pleasure. We strolled along the old fortress walls, visited the Lighthouse and the Dutch Reformed Church and enjoyed fantastic sunsets.
The hotel industry in Galle was outstanding - small boutique hotels in historic buildings combined colonial style with modern luxury.
We continued south to Yala, where the adventure began. Yala National Park is known for its high density of leopards - and we were actually lucky enough to see one of these majestic animals up close! During our safari, we also spotted elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles and colorful birdlife.
Here we stayed at the Uga Chena Huts, an absolute highlight of our trip. The luxurious chalets with their own pool in the middle of nature left nothing to be desired. The service was perfect, the food a dream - and at night we listened to the sounds of the jungle right outside our terrace. An unforgettable experience!
From the heat of the south, we drove into the cool highlands to Nuwara Eliya, also affectionately known as "Little England". The British colonial history can be felt everywhere here: time-honored mansions, well-tended gardens and the pleasant climate made the stay particularly appealing.
We visited a traditional tea plantation and learned all about the famous Ceylon tea. We were particularly impressed by the excursion to Horton Plains National Park, where we were rewarded with a spectacular view after a short hike at "World's End".
Next stop: Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Of course, a visit to the famous Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) was on the program. The atmosphere during the ceremonies is unique - there is a deep, almost tangible spirituality.
In the evening, we attended a traditional Kandyan dance performance and walked along the picturesque Kandy Lake. We also particularly enjoyed the beautiful botanical garden in Peradeniya with its huge trees and exotic plants.
Finally, we treated ourselves to four relaxing days in Thirappane - perfect for processing the many impressions of the trip. In this region, we visited important sites such as the Sigiriya rock fortress, where we climbed the steps and were rewarded with a breathtaking view. The ancient city of Anuradhapura, one of the most important centers of early Buddhism, also impressed us with its ruins and sacred stupas.
Staying in the middle of nature, away from the tourist crowds, was a wonderful experience. The luxurious resorts here spoiled us with great service, excellent food and an atmosphere of absolute relaxation.
Conclusion:
Sri Lanka is a country full of diversity and beauty. We were particularly impressed by the perfect combination of exciting sights and luxurious hotels - one example is the Uga Chena Huts, which sets standards in terms of hospitality, comfort and nature experiences. This trip will always remain a very special memory for us.
