The contrast is breathtaking. Shortly after the helicopter has dropped you off on the summit and flown away again, the silence returns. Fjords are tongues of water that extend from the ocean deep inland - they are usually the result of glacial melting. The term comes from Norwegian and is similar to the German word Förde. As fjords consist of salt water, have direct access to the sea and can be several hundred meters deep, some larger and smaller Pacific inhabitants can be found here. Orcas, killer whales and humpback whales occasionally stray here and like to show their fins to curious observers on the shore. But cod, halibut and redfish are also plentiful, to the delight of all skiers and snowboarders.

The Inside Passage between British Columbia and Alaska is one of the largest fjord landscapes in the world.
