Ireland's beautiful south
The south of Ireland enchants with its beautiful landscapes and mild climate. This makes for a colorful flora. In some places, palm trees even create a southern flair at the harbors. Colorful rhododendrons and fuchsias bloom along the coasts. The counties of Cork and Kerry in the southwest of the Emerald Isle are blessed with a varied, quite mountainous landscape and a fascinating coastline. Here we encounter the typical Irish landscape of rolling hills and green meadows against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean.
Cork, where we stay for two nights at the beginning of the trip, welcomes us with a real feel-good atmosphere. The city is beautifully situated on an island in the estuary of the River Lee. It is dotted with trendy cafés, interesting art galleries, unusual museums and outrageously good pubs.
The next stop on our round trip is Tralee in the heart of County Kerry. The small town with a population of 20,000 is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Slieve Mish Mountains in a beautiful natural setting. Since its foundation in the 13th century, Tralee has been destroyed and rebuilt four times. As a result, the city today is home to many different architectural styles and a wide variety of sights.
Our journey continues to Spanish Point in County Clare with its legendary, towering cliffs, primeval limestone landscape and idyllic towns. Clare is a coastal county with a lot of charm on the breathtaking Wild Atlantic Way. The region is famous for the Burren, a huge rocky landscape with rock formations, caves, fossils and an incredible variety of plants. The Burren is one of the most fascinating landscapes in Ireland.
The village of Spanish Point is a popular seaside resort nestled in the horseshoe-shaped Mal Bay in West Clare. The long sandy beach is a popular swimming and surfing spot. Spanish Point owes its name to the fact that two ships of the Spanish Armada sank off the coast in 1588. At the northern entrance to the beach parking lot is a memorial commemorating the visit of the Spanish royal couple in 1986 and recording the story of the sinking.
The final stop on our tour is - depending on the program - Limmerick in County Limmerick or Cashel County in Tipperary inland. The city of Limerick lies at the mouth of the River Shannon and is the third largest urban center on the island. The city is full of art galleries and chic new hotels. Famous are King John's Castle from the Middle Ages, the lively Milk Market, the magnificent old town houses and the many cool pubs and bars such as the glamorous Marco Polo.
The highlight in Tipperary is undoubtedly the Rock of Cashel with its more than 1,000 years of history. The mighty castle ruins tower over an unmistakable and breathtaking landscape that can only be found in Ireland.
