Costa Daurada - Catalonia's "Golden Coast" south of Barcelona
Catalonia's Costa Daurada, which is spelled Costa Dorada in Spanish, stretches 215 kilometers south of Barcelona to the border with the neighbouring Comunidad Valenciana to the south. It therefore corresponds to the coastal area of the province of Tarragona. It is less well-known than the Costa Brava to the north of Barcelona and the Costa Blanca to the south. Nevertheless, it has a lot to offer.
The Costa Daurada has more fine-grained, gently sloping sandy beaches than many other stretches of coastline in Spain - ideal conditions for beach lovers. Cambrils also has one of these wonderful sandy beaches. Cambrils, a former fishing village, now has more than 35,000 inhabitants. There are numerous restaurants serving tapas and fish dishes.
Catalonia's metropolis Barcelona is only 115 kilometers away from Cambrils. Tarragona, with its riverside promenades, churches and the famous Roman excavations, which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, is only 22 kilometers away.
In addition to golf, beach, city and culture fans, wine lovers will also get their money's worth. Some of the best red wines in Spain come from the small but fine Priorat wine-growing region - located around 40 kilometers northwest of Cambrils in the interior of the country. And Penedes - around 70 kilometers northeast of Cambrils - is by far the largest growing area for the famous Spanish sparkling wine Cava.
