The Batalha Golf Course impresses with the contrast between the lush green on the long and wide fairways and the stony ground on the sides, where numerous trees grow. The volcanic rock of the ground presented Chris Powell with a number of challenges when designing the very demanding course in the mid-1980s. The architect passed these on to the players in the form of water hazards and hills. Connoisseurs consider the course near Ponta Delgada to be one of the best courses in Portugal. The spectacular scenery certainly contributes to this, with sea views on one side and views of the mountains on the other.
