Heliskiing in Island: Powdern am Polarkreis

It is the land of Vikings, cool winds, fairies and trolls: Iceland. The heliskiing season starts in the Arctic Circle long after it has ended elsewhere.

It seems as if everything in Iceland is shrouded in a magical and mystical veil. This begins with the fact that Icelanders believe in fairies and trolls and therefore sometimes even plan roads with detours so as not to disturb certain fairy settlements. It continues with the fact that the days do not end in summer and the northern lights appear in winter. The magic is also reflected in the landscape: Iceland's huge mountains are the result of volcanic activity and rise directly out of the icy sea. The island consists of more than 30 active volcanoes, countless geysers and hot springs.

All this makes Iceland a magical place and one of the world's heliskiing hotspots. The mountains are not as high as in North America or the Alps. However, the mountain experience and the beauty of the peaks are simply tremendous. From the highest points of the areas, which are usually around 1,500 meters, you can ski all the way to the Atlantic. And now imagine flying by helicopter, skis or snowboard in tow, over the open sea from one peak to the next: an adventure not to be missed!

Skiing in the light of the midnight sun

In Iceland, lovers of the sport can get their turns in while in Canada, the USA or the Alps it's already summer break. The heliski season here runs from March to June - the weather is too extreme before then. In summer it is always light and in winter and spring the Northern Lights dance across the sky. Because the sun never really sets in May and June, heliski operators have plenty of time to wait for the perfect snow and weather conditions. As early as March 21, it is light for much longer in Iceland. This makes heliskiing more flexible. If the weather is bad during the day, you can simply fly and ski late in the evening. And a night run in the warm light of the midnight sun is unforgettable. We have experienced it ourselves!

The scenery then looks like this: Although it is sometimes well after twelve o'clock, the sun is still like a glowing ball of fire on the horizon. The snow cover glistens in all shades of orange and red. Only a handful of ski tracks wind their way down the slope to the shore. In a few minutes, the sun dips into the sparkling sea, only to rise again immediately. Here you can make the last turns of the day all the way down to the sea.

Heliskiing for everyone

But it's not just the wonderful landscape that offers advantages. The areas are suitable for both experts and less experienced skiers. The stability of the snow cover is higher than in the Rocky Mountains. Experts can therefore seek their challenge on extremely steep slopes without having to take any major risks. While the pros have fun, less experienced skiers can tackle other slopes, which are not very steep and also completely treeless. As a result, Iceland is also suitable for skiers who have not yet gained much experience off the groomed slopes and especially on forest descents.

Snow in masses

Because some of the slopes extend all the way to the sea, the difference in altitude is considerable. However, the snow conditions can also be changeable. In March and April in particular, you can experience everything from deep powder snow to hard patches and soft spring snow on a descent. In May and June, on the other hand, heliskiing thrives on its firn snow days. This is when the sun thaws the upper layers of snow during the course of the day. This firn snow is easy to ski on well into the summer. An average of ten meters of white powder falls on the peaks and glaciers every year.

Heliskiers and ski tourers

I have been organizing heliski trips worldwide since 1986 - with know-how and a genuine passion for skiing. TRAVELZONE combines the best of 35 years of heliskiing experience. That's why heliskiing with TRAVELZONE is different: safe, unique and unforgettable!

Best of Heliskiing by Kenny Prevost

With terrains of up to 4,000 square meters, the Icelandic areas are almost as large as the Swiss canton of Valais. While tens of thousands of skiers fill the slopes and off-piste runs around Zermatt and Saas Fee every day, only a few privileged heliskiing guests and the odd ski tourer get lost in these huge mountain regions. Thanks to the flying lift, heliskiers can easily manage a dozen descents in one day. As the helicopter can land almost anywhere, one dream run follows the next. The guides always find the slopes with the best snow quality and the lowest avalanche risk.

Speaking of guides: in addition to the spectacular conditions, you can also expect first-class trained guides from Iceland, Canada, France and Switzerland. And, of course, the same safety standards that are regarded as world-leading are also applied.

After a strenuous day of skiing, fresh fish from the sea and rivers of Iceland is served in the lodges with their typical red roofs. Another advantage is the distance. Iceland is less than a four-hour flight away from us. So: a heliskiing vacation without jet lag.

Stopover in Reykjavik

On your trip to Iceland, you can make a short stopover in Reykjavik. If you want, you can add a jeep tour to the geysers. Strokkur reliably sprays its hot water fountain into the sky every three to seven minutes. Or you can drive out to the volcanoes and visit Eyjafallajökull, which kept half the world on tenterhooks in 2010 when it paralyzed air traffic over large parts of Europe for days with its ash clouds. Reykjavik also has many lovely restaurants and bars along the shopping streets and the Blue Lagoon is only around 20 minutes away. In this breathtaking natural spa, you can immerse yourself in 37 to 42 degree Celsius water at freezing temperatures and watch clouds of steam rise above the thermal baths. It is designed for relaxation and is also said to stimulate healing processes. The ideal place to top off an unforgettable heliski trip to Iceland.
