More than just heliskiing: Deplar Farm

By Yannick Erlachner

I'll never forget March 4, 2025! It was the start of one of my greatest adventures: my very first heliskiing trip!

Full of anticipation - and yes, with a healthy dose of nervousness - I set off with Air Canada. The flight was pleasant, the transfers via Toronto went smoothly and without long waiting times. As soon as I arrived in Vancouver, I was pleasantly surprised at how uncomplicated and friendly everything was.
The transfer to Whistler was also perfect: no delays, direct transfer to the Crystal Lodge in the heart of Whistler. Despite arriving late, I was warmly welcomed! The night at the Crystal Lodge was relaxing, the room was cozy and quiet. An ideal start to my trip.

Whistler
The next morning I used the time to discover Whistler on my own. I strolled through the charming village, soaking up the Canadian flair and was immediately impressed by the openness and warmth of the people. After a visit to the Olympic sites, the next big step came: I was picked up by the TYAX heliskiing team and taken to the airport in Pemberton.

The group was already waiting there - accompanied by coffee, snacks and a warm smile. After the welcome, we were given an introduction to the basic safety procedures around the helicopter. As the Bell 412 helicopter thundered through the valley and landed, I realized: now it's getting serious - and my heart beat faster.

Flight into the wilderness
The 20-minute flight to Tyax Lodge was breathtaking: snow-covered mountain peaks, frozen lakes and endless forests - Canada was at its most impressive. When we landed, we received another warm welcome. The lodge is idyllically situated directly on the lake, nestled in a fairytale winter landscape.

The first impression: Wow! The Tyax Lodge is a real gem. From the spacious spa area to the cozy fireplaces to the stylish bar - everything was perfect. WLAN was available, but cell phone reception was deliberately avoided here. And to be honest: it was soothing to switch off completely for a few days.
The lodge team was always present, warm and helpful - you immediately felt welcome. After a hearty lunch and a quick check-in to the room, safety training was already on the agenda. Equipment such as avalanche transceivers, avalanche airbags, radios and powder skis or snowboards were included and up to date. Stretching in the morning before breakfast and a small but excellent fitness room rounded off the experience.
In the evening, we enjoyed our first dinner - a culinary highlight! What the kitchen team conjured up here in the middle of the wilderness was simply sensational. Whether it was breakfast, dinner or the cozy after-ski picnic - every dish was prepared with attention to detail and tasted great.

The big day - my first time heliskiing!
Then it finally arrived: the first day of skiing. Blue skies, not a single cloud - perfect conditions for what lay ahead. After the briefing with our experienced guides, we flew deep into the backcountry. The nervousness increasingly gave way to huge anticipation. I felt safe, well prepared - and incredibly excited.
And then came the moment I will never forget: The door of the helicopter opened, the wind blew the powder snow into my face - and I stood alone for the first time on an untouched summit, ready for the first descent.
What followed was pure magic: endless, wide slopes with feather-light powder. Descents with over 1,000 vertical meters per run. Sometimes technical, sometimes flowy - but always breathtakingly beautiful. Our guides led us safely through the terrain and always gave us valuable tips. The atmosphere in the group was fantastic - you could feel the mutual respect and shared euphoria.

Downdays?No problem!
In the days that followed, the weather didn't quite play ball - it snowed almost constantly. But even the so-called **downdays** were an experience: whether cross-country skiing through snow-covered forests, axe throwing or a round of broomball - there was never a dull moment. Those who preferred to take it easy could relax in the spa, enjoy a sports massage at a very fair price or read a book by the fireplace - simply wonderful!

Last days in powder paradise
Then the skies cleared again - and the grand finale awaited. Over 1.5 meters of fresh snow had accumulated and the conditions were fantastic. We climbed back into the helicopter, explored new zones and once again skied the most spectacular lines. The unlimited vertical meters of the 5-day program allowed us to really enjoy what this area has to offer - and that's a lot.
Every descent was a new adventure, every line a new rush. The joy, the adrenaline, the feeling of freedom - it was all tangible in these moments. The untouched nature, the vastness, the silence... and then the rich whirring of the helicopter in the distance - indescribable

Conclusion: Canada, you have captured my heart
After five intense, impressive days, it was time to say goodbye. With a backpack full of experiences, countless photos, new friendships and the firm decision to return, I set off on my journey home.
The combination of a well-organized trip, excellent infrastructure, professional guides and the incredible nature of Canada was simply unbeatable. TYAX Heliskiing not only exceeded my expectations.
For me, this trip was not just another travel experience. It was a dream come true. And I know that it was definitely not the last time I flew through Canada's mountains in a helicopter.
