Powder Adventures with a True Pioneering History

Battle Abbey Backcountry Lodge is a secluded winter wonderland for ski tourers, splitboarders, and heliskiing enthusiasts. The lodge was co-founded in 1978 by mountain pioneers led by Hans Gmoser, the founder of Canadian Mountain Holidays and a pioneer of heliskiing. Today, at 2,200 meters, a beautifully renovated lodge awaits you in the exclusive Selkirk terrain, featuring tree runs, alpine bowls, couloirs, and long glacier runs. Small groups, certified guides, and plenty of powder. This is what true backcountry feels like.

Lodge Description

Battle Abbey Backcountry Lodge is located at an elevation of 2,220 meters in the heart of the Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia and is one of Canada’s legendary backcountry lodges. Its history dates back to the late 1970s, when Bill Putnam, together with Hans Gmoser—the founder of CMH and a pioneer of heliskiing—laid the foundation for this special place. Today, the lodge combines its original mountain character with modern comforts and a rich alpine atmosphere. The lodge has 5 double rooms, which can be configured with either a double bed or two single beds.

After an intense day on the snow, a warm, cozy lodge awaits you, featuring five guest rooms, heated floors, comfortable beds, a boot room, hot showers, and a kitchen that focuses heavily on regional products from Western Canada. Particularly impressive is the sauna with a view of the glaciers surrounding the Headwaters of Butters Creek. Battle Abbey thus remains exactly what defines a true backcountry lodge: remote, authentic, and steeped in a rich history of skiing.

Arrival & Departure

After landing in Calgary, check in right away at the Calgary Airport Marriott In-Terminal—you don’t even have to leave the building. After a restful night, you’ll board the shuttle bus at 6:45 a.m. Thanks to the time difference, getting up early is usually no problem.

From Calgary, the bus takes a good three hours to reach the helipad in Golden. By then, the magnificent panoramic views of Banff National Park—at least after sunrise—will have made the trip well worth it. If you’d rather travel by rental car, that’s no problem either. Ask us—we have great deals on affordable rental cars.

At the helipad, you’ll complete your initial safety training. Afterward, the helicopter will take you to the lodge. By the afternoon, you’ll already be out on the slopes on skis or a snowboard.

On the day of departure, you’ll be hitting the powder until 11 a.m., and if all goes well, you’ll arrive in Calgary around 4:30 p.m. There are some evening flights to Europe. However, we recommend planning an extra night in Calgary. If the weather doesn’t cooperate and your return trip is delayed, you might otherwise miss your flight.
