Review of the heliski winter 2024/2025

By Kenny Prevost, Max Schmidt & Yannick Erlachner

What a great and long season! Kenny started the season in Patagonia in October and Max ended it in Iceland in May. We've had another great powder week, discovered new places and made lots of memories. Here is a short summary of this year's experiences.

Wild Patagonia
After traveling to Antarctica in January 2024, Kenny was drawn back to the southern hemisphere. This time, Eleven Rio Palena Lodge in Patagonia was on the agenda. The high and steep mountains impress even globetrotters like Kenny. You experience much more than just heli-skiing there; level 4 and 5 river rafting and large BBQs are also on the program. You get a very good insight into the wild Patagonia and it is a very special start to the ski season. Kenny will be happy to give you a deeper insight in person and you can see a lot here.

Holidays in Canada
Some of our customers spent very special holidays in the remote lodges of CMH. The snow was great in the early season, the atmosphere was festive and the experience unforgettable. It is the perfect gift for the whole family and very attractively priced. One customer was heliskiing for the first time and was simply overwhelmed. Such feedback is the reason why we love our job and always want to find the best experience for you.

The trend destination Japan is calling
The demand for Japan continues to rise and Kenny and Max went back to see for themselves. Max was in Niseko and Furano with Ueli Kestenholz. In Niseko, snow-covered birch forests beckoned and in Furano they were able to enjoy the best sunshine, which was ideal for climbing Asahidake, the highest active volcano on Hokkaido. Kenny's group also explored the hidden powder gems of northern Honshu as well as Hokkaido. It was a versatile trip with top powder snow conditions, fascinating Japanese culture and lots of fun. We are already looking forward to the next trip to Japan!

Greenhorn on tour with Tyax
Yannick, our newest team member, had his first heliskiing or rather heliboarding experience this winter. His first time was at Tyax, where they operate a single-group program. It snowed and snowed and snowed. He had a great start in challenging conditions. In the end, the avalanche risk was so high due to all the fresh snow that the flatter descents became a hurdle for him as a snowboarder. Safety is always a top priority for us and our partners. Nature is always stronger and we adapt to it, which sometimes means that you have to do without steep descents. To be honest, a perfect week the first time isn't good either, you have to be able to top it. And even a week like that is incredible fun and it's hard to go back to the slopes with the crowds. You can find the full experience here.

Galena: Back to the roots
After more than two decades, Kenny led a small, hand-picked group back to Galena, one of the most legendary CMH lodges deep in the Selkirk Mountains. The format was deliberate: Semi-private heli with two groups of four skiers each - an arrangement that allowed for more flexibility, more aspiration and more individual adventure.
The lodge itself? Still exactly as Kenny remembered it - rustic, cozy, authentically Canadian. It was almost as if time had stood still - in the best sense of the word. But what has definitely evolved is the service, which is convincing at the highest level: warm, personal, efficient - typical CMH.
The skiing? Spectacular. Galena is famous for its intense tree skiing, and this year the terrain has once again lived up to its promise: narrow, playful forests, steep gullies, glistening powder snow - a playground for experienced skiers with a desire for a challenge. The strength of this terrain is particularly evident in the semi-private set-up: fewer compromises, more freedom in line choice, more intense skiing experiences. Galena remains a bank for excellent tree skiing - with no ifs and buts.

Albreda Lodge: The best of both worlds
The next highlight followed just under five weeks later: a week at Albreda Lodge, the small, exclusive hideaway in Mike Wiegele's heliski universe. Anyone who has already been there knows: Albreda is charming, personal and offers access to some of the best terrain options in British Columbia.
This week was a gift: out of six possible ski days, five days were skied in perfect conditions. And what conditions they were! Meters of fresh snow, stable avalanche conditions, cold temperatures and - as ordered - blue skies at just the right time.
The terrain? A brilliant mix of high alpine glaciers, long open slopes, playful forest descents and challenging lines. Every day a new chapter. Every descent an experience. The guides always found the perfect balance between safety, enjoyment and sporting challenge - exactly how heliskiing should be.
And emotionally? This week was pure magic. A memory that stays with you. We often say that heliskiing can be addictive - a pleasure with a high repeat factor. And indeed, this week has once again shown how quickly you succumb to this feeling of boundless freedom.

Conclusion:
Two lodges, two concepts, one common conclusion: heliskiing in Canada remains one of the most impressive nature and sports experiences you can have. Whether in the proven CMH style with Galena or with the personal touch with Mike Wiegele - both weeks were highlights of a season that will stay with us for a long time to come.

Alaska Backcountry Guides tested
Even though Kenny says every year that it was my last time in Alaska, he is always drawn back to the state of steep slopes. Kenny is going back to Alaska again next year. This time he wanted to see something new and joined Alaska Backcountry Guides in Valdez. The flight from Anchorage to Valdez over the glaciers alone was worth the trip. The pilot flew a little closer to the peaks just for them. There's not much to say about the skiing except that the steep, challenging runs were excellent. The Chugach Mountains have a lot to offer, even if a trip there is a little more weather-prone than if you have several mountain ranges to choose from. However, the price and the (semi-)private program are very attractive. We have found a new alternative here, which is great.

End of the season with the Vikings
Island had a very dry winter this year and there was simply a lack of snow. When the conditions are difficult, it's the ideal time for us to test an area, as everything is fantastic when the snow is good. So Max spontaneously made his way to Eleven Experience's Deplar Farm. He was worried when he saw the lack of snow, but when the small group took off in the helicopter, his worries were forgotten. The snow fields had surprisingly good firn snow and so the group was able to ski steep descents with a view of the sea. Of course, they were shorter than usual, but the experience of the guides and the flexibility of the helicopter made it a good experience. Iceland, and Deplar Farm in particular, offers much more than just heli-skiing. The lodge is one of the best in the world and the variety of alternative programs makes it a unique experience. We would like to thank all our customers for their trust and we hope to be able to organize unforgettable adventures for you again soon. We were delighted with all the videos and pictures and would have loved to be there with you everywhere.
We have a few information evenings coming up again this year and we hope to see you there again in person to talk about the shared joy of heliskiing and powder skiing on untouched slopes. We look forward to hearing from you again soon!
