Revelstoke: How to dance at three weddings on your ski vacation

Heliskiing, catskiing and a unique ski mountain - Revelstoke offers everything a freerider's heart desires. In the middle of the Selkirks lies the Ski-Dorado - a paradise without down days.

Sometimes bad weather makes heliskiing dreams come true. As sad as it is, nature is sometimes merciless. That's why we love it a little. And because so-called down days are sometimes unavoidable, a plan B is all the more welcome in order to enjoy fresh powder despite the bad weather.

And the reputation of the railroad town on the Powder Highway alone shows that there is plenty of it in Revelstoke. 18 meters of dry powder snow fall here on average per year at high altitudes. This is why Revelstoke attracted freeriders from all over North America early on - long before the first ski lift went into operation.

Before 2007, Revelstoke was a pure heliskiing area - or rather two. Selkirk Tangiers and CMH have been operating heliskiing lodges in the small town on the Columbia River for many years. Both have outstanding terrain in the Selkirk and Monashee mountains, which are famous for their quantity and quality of snow.

However, if the helicopter has to stay on the ground, there are several alternatives in Revelstoke: first of all, a really challenging ski area, then snowmobiling as an exotic change or, theoretically, catskiing. Great Northern Snowcat, a catskiing provider, is right next door. But to be honest: on down days, everyone runs to catskiing, which is usually fully booked long in advance anyway. In reality, it is therefore rarely a suitable substitute for heliskiing on downdays.

Good advice from real heliskiing experts makes all the difference. That's why I book with Kenny and his team. I have already experienced many a **secret tip** and many unforgettable heliski trips.

As a pre-booked addition to a heliski or ski resort trip, however, catskiing is definitely worth a try. You can book the catskiing program directly with Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR) via TRAVELZONE. And according to our snow specialists, this catskiing program is now also highly recommended.

We used to advise against booking catskiing with RMR. The old catskiing terrain right next to the classic ski area was simply not good enough for our requirements. Now, however, a catskiing trip with RMR at Great Northern Snowcat is worthwhile.

The advantage of freeriding with the support of a snowcat in North America is the independence from the weather. In fog or strong winds at high altitudes, it becomes difficult for the helicopter. Although a snowcat cannot reach high alpine glacier areas, it has no problems reaching low runs. So even in poor visibility, the Cat will take you to exciting forest slopes that are ideal for treeskiing.

And then there's the Revelstoke Mountain Resort ski area, which is far too good to be visited just as a warm-up for cat or heli-skiing. The resort on Mt. Mackenzie offers over 1,700 meters of vertical drop from the summit to the lowest point - no other ski resort in North America has more. There is also a 15-kilometre run down to the valley, where the snow quality often leaves a lot to be desired in the last few meters.

At the top, however, "Revy" is magnificent. The Revelstoke Mountain Resort is a playground for freeriders of all abilities. Of course, pleasure skiers and boarders also get their money's worth in Revelstoke, but "Revy" is only really good when you have mastered your poles and there is enough snow.

Whether it's the treeski slalom in the forest, the double black diamond mogul slopes, the endless off-piste possibilities or the perfectly groomed runs from the summit to the valley - the Revelstoke ski area is a real treat for experts. And a visit to Revelstoke is best enjoyed by those who can dance to all three tunes. Warm up in the ski area, then immerse yourself in the terrain with pre-booked catskiing and finally experience the pinnacle of freeriding with heliskiing - that's what makes skiing and snowboarding vacations in Revelstoke absolutely unique. Our TRAVELZONE freeride experts think Revelstoke is really cool!
