Anyone who starts a heliskiing business together should know who they are embarking on an adventurous ride with ups and downs. Fortunately, the two Bella Coola founders Beat and Swede already knew each other from several freeride adventures.
Anyone who starts a heliskiing business together should know who they are embarking on an adventurous ride with ups and downs. Fortunately, the two Bella Coola founders Beat and Swede already knew each other from several freeride adventures.
They had already had to rely on each other several times before to achieve success together. And the third member of the team, Christian, also knew exactly what he was doing.
The two freeride cracks had already crossed paths in the early 1980s and worked together on various projects around Whistler and in the Garibaldi Range. Beat as a ski filmmaker, Swede as a location-safety coordinator. One day at the Banff Mountain Film Festival, they finally met the young and highly talented ski filmmaker Christian, who shortly afterwards set off on ski adventures with Beat and Swede to shoot groundbreaking freeride scenes in North America and Greenland. Sometimes it was about their passion for making thrilling ski and snowboard films, sometimes about commercial projects. But in all cases, they had to use all their expertise to get themselves, their riders and the helicopter pilots safely through the shoot.
In 2000, the three of them came to Bella Coola for the first time, at a time when it was becoming increasingly difficult to get permission to film in Whistler. It was love at first sight. A short time later, they secured the exclusive rights of use so that no one could snatch their powder playground from under their noses. And now that they had the huge area, they could use it for another line of business. Their favorite backdrop became heli-skiing terrain and they opened their first lodge, Tweedsmuir Park Lodge. Bella Coola Heli Sports quickly found its place among the most renowned heli-skiing providers in the world.
The Bella Coola Heli Sports area is still considered one of the most popular ski movie backdrops in the world. Warren Miller and co., who regularly visit Bella Coola for their shoots, are well aware of this. Swede and Christian have since retired. Today, Beat runs the company as Managing Director - with the same passion as on the first day.
Discovering new things with Kenny is always fun, but above all you're never disappointed!
